Glacier lake Jokulsarlon - Jökulsárlón
When Vatnajokull, Europes largest glacier, began it´s retreat from the shore of south Iceland around 1950, it left behind a lagoon around 100 meters deep, filled with cold meltwater and huge icebergs that head out to the sea.
The colours and shapes of the Jokulsarlon are astounding its one of the greatest natural wonders in Iceland, travelling in this dreamlike world, dwarfed by the calving icebergs, man marvels at the majestic magnitude of nature. A august sight you can never get enough of.
Jökulsárlón is in South East Iceland, at the roots of Europe's biggest glacier Vatnajökull. Vast icebergs break off into the lake and drift around. The sand and gravel dunes all around are the main breeding grounds of the Great Skua in the northern hemisphere. Situated on the shore of the glacier lagoon is a new and elegant restaurant which seats 60-70 persons.
Glacier Lagoon - Breidamerkursandur.
The Glacier lagoon, filled with odd shaped icebergs, in Breidamerkursandur is one of Icelands greatest nature wonders. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier and are carried to the sea by the shortest glacial river in Iceland, only about one to two km.
