The East-Iceland Heritage Museum

On display are artifacts, pictures and restorations conveying life, culture and work in the region from settlement in the early middle ages to the present. Specially noteworthy are the contents of a pagan grave and a restoration of a living room/bedroom of a traditional Icelandic farm.
A vivid collection of artifacts, pictures and restorations gives a unique insight into life and leisure in East Iceland from the Viking Age to the present.

The East Iceland Heritage Museum features:

A 16th Century sword found on the ancient path leading to Iceland“s Parliament.

A classic turf farmhouse, rebuilt and furnished inside the museum.

Antique jewelry and examples of our historic National Dress.

Church furnishings dating back to 1744.

Viking Pagan grave from 980 A.D., displayed exactly as it was discovered in 1995.

Open every day except Monday in June, July and August from 11:00-17:00.
Admission 400, children half price.
German-language guide often available.
Museum shop with souvenirs, handicrafts and coffee.

What's on this summer?

Every Thursday, is a "Day of Icelandic Heritage" On those days there will be Icelandic handicraft and heritage "workshops", at the East-Iceland Heritage Museum. Each thursday from 13.00-17.00, from13th of June untill 29th of August 2002.

Every Saturday, at 10.00 (from the Information Center) will be guided walks through Egilsstašir, for German speaking tourists. Historical sights conveied, and after the walk you can taste a typical Icelandic food at the Egilsstašir guesthouse. If you are interested, you can make an order here E-mail
