Geysir
is a beautiful hotel open all year round and is located next to one
of Iceland's main attractions, Geysir in Haukadalur. Guests at the hotel
are able to experience the Icelandic hot springs area at any time
of the day, in different light and can examine all the sights and
sounds of this fascinating area in perfect tranquillity. A range of facilities are also available for people wishing to hold meetings and conferences here. There are numerous things to do near Geysir. The central highlands are only a short distance away via the Kjölur road and Gullfoss is a mere 10 km away. The Haukadalur valley is also a great place to get to know the beautiful countryside of southern Iceland. There is a horse rental, campsite, swimming pool an a wide range of walking paths just by this geothermal wonder. On 3rd June 2000 an excellent multi-media museum, the Geysircentre, was opened at Geysir. The museum provides a unique opportunity to study the geology of Iceland in an exciting and realistic way. The main exhibits show the geological history of Iceland, its glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes and geothermal heat. Geysir itself is also well explained. There are also features on some less well known natural phenomena such as unique types of vegetation and microbes which live in the hot springs, withstanding fearsome temperatures. The museums highlights the terrific power of nature, where glacial bursts and the interplay between volcanoes and glaciers shape the land. The Geysir Centre also contains a folk museum which depicts life as it used to be in this area and there is a fascinating exhibit on the history of the Haukadalur valley from the time of settlement to the present day. Among the highlights are the exhibits on Ari fróði, known as "the father of Icelandic literature"; the story of tourism to this area at the beginning of the twentieth century; and folk tales set in Haukadalur.
