Snaefellsjokull National Park – We’re in the closest vicinity of the southern entrance into the National Park which is only about 8 km away from Brekkubaer. What one finds there is magnificent nature, the interplay between the ocean and the lava/land, relics of old fishing stations, incredible bird-cliffs, old hiking trails and many old (and active) volcanos, as well as the peace and quiet that a National Park offers. Above it towers the awe-inspiring Snaefellsjokull glacier wrapped with mystique and energy that so many are attracted to.

Snowmobile tours to the top of Snaefellsjokull glacier – During the summer season daily snowmobile tours to the top of the Glacier are available, from early morning till the midnight tour, which is an indescribable experience. Tickets are available at Brekkubaer and it takes 20 min to drive from us to the departure point on Jokulhals road.

Hiking trails at Hellnar -The coastline from Hellnar to Arnarstapi is a nature preserve where one finds an ancient hiking trail through the lava field and sheer drop bird-cliffs full of nesting birds in summertime. Guests at Guesthouse Brekkubaer receive a map with the major hiking trails of the area, whether the hike is to be long or short.

A boat tour along the coastline – A boat tour is available from the small seaport at Arnarstapi. The boat sails into the Pump-gorge by Arnarstapi, towards Gatklettur and along the coastal cliffs to Hellnar, into the Badstofa cave-gorge and out to sea to the Hellnagoltur reef. It’s also possible to do some deep sea fishing for cod on the rich fishing ground off shore.

Singing Cave – Jokulhals road – The Jokulhals road is open for traffic during the summer months and runs from Hellnar/Arnarstapi to Olafsvik in the north. At the foot of Mt. Stapafell is Singing Cave where Bardur Snaefellsas lived while he built his farm at Laugarbrekka at Hellnar, and later used for counseling with his men. The cave is a dome, with a great echo and on the walls are inscriptions dating all the way back to the time of naturalist Eggert Olafsson who traveled here in 1753.

Golf – Nine hole golf courses are at Gardar in Stadarsveit (25 min by car from Brekkubaer) and Olafsvik (30 min by car from Brekkubaer).

Horse rentals - Horse rentals are at Bodvarsholt (20 min by car from Brekkubaer) and at Lysuholl in Stadarsveit (25 min by car from Brekkubaer). They offer short or long riding tours, i.e. along the beach east of Budir.

Seals - By Ytri-Tunga in Stadarsveit (30 min by car from Brekkubaer) it’s generally possible to find seals on the boulders just off shore. Easy access for everyone.

Geothermal mineral baths at Lysuholl – The geothermal baths (hot mineral water) at Lysuholl are unique, rich of many minerals and offers healing properties for the body. The water is without chlorine.

Birdwatching Thousands of birds nest in the cliffs by Hellnar shore and one can watch fulmars, kitti-wakes and guillemots up close. Svalthufa and Ondverdarnes also offer magnificent bird-cliffs. One of the largest breeding grounds of the arctic tern is between Hellissandur and Rif, and smaller colonies can be found at Arnarstapi and Hellnar. The lakes and ponds in Stadarsveit and by Rifsos host many different types of wading birds, some very rare.

Longer tours - Should you consider setting up base at Brekkubaer, a round trip of Snaefellsnes peninsula offers a nice half or whole day tour. Stops can be made at Grundarfjordur, at Bjarnarhofn at the shark museum, a hike can be made to the top of Mt. Helgafell (a sacred mountain 88 m high) which is just south of Stykkisholmur and SeaTours offers tours of the islands of Breidifjordur.

Whale watching - Off the cost of Snaefellsnes peninsula is one of the best ocean area in the world to spot whales, both blue whale and the humpback whale, among the world’s largest animals, as well as smaller whales such as the orca whale and dolphins. A whale-watching boat departs every day from Olafsvik (30 min by car from Brekkubaer) for a 5-7 hour tour. Tickets available at Brekkubaer. For those who don’t care for a boat tour orca whales are often spotted just off the shore at Hellnar and are then clearly visible from Guesthouse Brekkubaer.
