The company's beginnings date back to 1947 when Guğmundur Runólfsson ordered a timber boat called Runólfur SH-135, built in the town of Norğfjörğur. Guğmundur Runólfsson hf. was founded on 18 December 1974. From the start operations centred on fishing and fish processing, along with operating a net workshop. Ground fish processing is the company's primary operation, and improvements are continually being made aimed at increasing capacity, rationalization and processing quality, thereby increasing profitability.
The company operates three trawlers; Hringur SH-535, Ingimundur SH 335 and Helgi SH-135. They fishes mainly in home waters, i.e., the south and western fishing grounds. The primary catch is cod, haddock, saithe, ocean perch, catfish and flat fish. Cod, haddock, saithe and ocean perch is mostly processed in the company's ground fish facilities, while other species are sold at fish markets or exported in containers.
Guğmundur Runólfsson hf. operates a well-equipped net workshop with a staff of three men. The primary work is making bottom trawls for vessels based in Grundarfjörğur. There has also been a considerable increase in services for shrimp boats based in the Breiğafjörğur area. In addition, the workshop is well-equipped to provide a variety of wire and cable splicing services, as well as making and repairing rockhoppers. Other services include sales of wires, chains, shackles and various other equipment related to fishing gear. The workshop also has the capability to repair "super" trawls used by the trawler fleet for catching deep-sea ocean perch.
Ground Fish Processing
Guğmundur Runólfsson hf. operates a processing plant in Grundarfjörğur in West Iceland. Production, which is almost entirely frozen fish, has been consistent from the outset. About 3000-4500 tons are processed annually by a workforce that in 1999 averaged 60 people. By far most of the catch is landed by company-owned vessels (73%). In recent years the company has systematically worked at improving plant efficiency while increasing ground fish utilization and price.
Marketing and Sales
Last year major changes were made in the company's sales organization. Iceland's largest sales associations: Sölumiğstöğ hrağfrystihúsanna hf. and SÍF hf., have changed their purchasing policy which has effected fisheries operations such as Guğmundur Runólfsson hf. The company has responded by negotiating individual contracts with the above-mentioned companies as well as with Íslenska umboğssalan hf. The largest market for Guğmundur Runólfsson's products is the USA, with close to a 50% share of net turnover, primarily in sales of cod and haddock. Sales to Great Britain, Germany and France account for 16% of net turnover. Fish species not processed by the company are sold on various domestic markets, or exported in containers when prices have been favourable. In recent years the company has followed developments on various markets, in order to respond quickly to changes in market conditions.
